Riverside Hub, Northampton

Riverside Hub is the UK’s biggest indoor play centre and it’s amazing! They’ve got free parking and access into the building is easy. There’s a £5 registration fee for your first visit (you can register and pay online beforehand to make life a little easier when you arrive) which seems standard for these large play centres. Entrance prices into Riverside Hub on weekends, bank holidays and school holidays are as follows (accurate August 2018):

  • Under 1’s £2 (babies aged 0 – 3 months are free of charge)
  • Children 1 – 3 years £7.50
  • Children 4 – 12 years £9.95
  • Adults £3.50 (Grandparents are Half Price)
Prices during school term times on Monday – Friday are cheaper and can be found by clicking here.
Riverside Hub have several places where you can change nappies. There’s a changing table near the stairs (public), there’s a baby change just outside of a cubicle so you can change the baby whilst your older one uses the toilet, there’s a baby change and a toilet in the same room and there’s baby changing facilities upstairs too (but I didn’t go into those ones). The ladies’ toilets have lowered sinks and a footstool and there’s even some unisex toilets too.

Riverside Hub has a lovely cafe with reasonably priced food and it is all oven baked – nothing fried in sight! Kids’ meals are £3.75 and include both hot food and a picnic meal deal. You can even order a small portion of a meal from the adult menu for the same price. Pureed baby food is also available at £1.50. The adult menu offers a variety of food including salads, pasta, jacket potatoes and pizza and are around £6-7. I started counting the Ikea highchairs but got bored by the time I hit 30! I was really impressed with the amount they had. The staff were really friendly too and made a fuss of the children which was nice considering the amount of children they must see.

Now on to the play areas…
There’s a small darkened sensory room with bubble walls, an aquarium, interesting textures and lots of soft areas for babies to lie or sit and enjoy the experience. There’s also a larger under 2s area with more sensory equipment such as twinkling mirrors, lava lamps, soft equipment to climb on and sequin cushions (which Millie loved!).

The ‘World of Play’ area contains 20 different soft play zones and countries with games, puzzles, slide and climbing equipment. There’s even foam balls that you can fire from a cannon and a giant hamburger that you can build. You have to see it to believe it.

The area we spent most of our time in is the ‘Toddler Village’, an enclosed area with role play houses, slides, a ball pit, huge cuddly toys, soft building blocks and crooked houses to explore. Millie and her friends played in here happily for aaaaaaages.

Riverside Hub also have a ‘Creative Studio’ where the children can take part in different art and craft activities, at an extra cost. They have laser tag which looked like a lot of fun but is suitable for children aged 4 upwards which meant I couldn’t try it out but I’m sure it’s brilliant…and there’s no additional charge. There’s also no additional charge to have a go on the 10 metre high climbing tree or the Go Karts or the carousel. I can’t stress enough how much fun we had here!!!

If all of that wasn’t enough, there are classes available during Northamptonshire term times at no extra cost (aside from ‘Strictly Hub Dancing’). Classes include music, sensory play, baby massage and yoga. Details can be found by clicking here.

I honestly can’t think of a single thing I would change here about the play equipment and cafe. Pricing is good value if you’ve got one child and spend a long time here but it could be seen as expensive with more than one child. Having said that, it’s an absolutely fantastic place and I really recommend that you try it.

Millie is giving Riverside Hub a rating of ‘amazing’!
