Close Leece Farm Shop and Café

Close Leece Farm Shop and Café is a renovated barn (opened February 2019) on Patrick Road, St Johns. The shop stocks a variety of local food, drink and handmade crafts and the café uses Manx produce in their dishes, prepared by an Isle of Man Chef of the Year.

Access

Access into the cafe is easy as there are no steps, but there isn’t a huge amount of space inside for a pram so if you can avoid bringing it in, it might be easier. You can tell the owners have put a huge amount of work into this cafe because it is absolutely stunning with 10 tables downstairs, a wood burner to keep you feeling cosy and even an additional area upstairs with sofas. From the moment you walk in, you’re made to feel very welcome and the staff are very attentive and friendly.

Food & Drink

Close Leece Farm Shop and Cafe menu showcases a variety of local food and drink and the suppliers can be found on the final sheet of the menu. The food and drink here are, as you can imagine, really tasty. I struggled to decide what to choose as there were so many things on the menu that I love.

You can order breakfast items (served all day) such as poached eggs on toast, bacon/sausage sandwich or full Manx breakfast. As well as bigger meals such as chorizo and butter bean stew and trio of sausage, mash and onion gravy. I was thrilled to see a children’s menu with meals such as sausage, mash and gravy, beans on toast and a sandwich, apple and baked treat.

The prices seem in line with similar cafes I’ve been to on the island but with the added bonus of supporting independent and local businesses. If you’re only popping in for a drink then there’s a range of delicious cakes on the counter – I can highly recommend the brownies…best brownie I think I’ve ever had! Although there isn’t mention of ‘free-from’ items on the menu, it does suggest talking to your server if you have any special dietary requirements.

Highchairs & Baby Change

Close Leece Farm has two wooden highchairs (Feb 2019) with straps and they are a pretty good height for the tables. They don’t quite push under enough though so messy Millie did manage to drop some food on her lap, despite wearing a ‘catch-all’ bib. I know they are looking at ways to improve and so plan on getting more highchairs which we look forward to trying out.

There is a single, large accessible toilet downstairs with a drop-down changing table with strap. An additional toilet is located upstairs (without baby changing facilities), saving you having to come downstairs if you’ve decided to sit up there.

Extras & Activities

The cafe has an outside area with additional seating amongst the beautiful countryside, Manx Loaghtan and chickens.

The part of our visit that we enjoyed the most was probably the swings and the area for Millie to run around. When we first visited Close Leece Farm Sop and Cafe, this outside area wasn’t enclosed but they have since blocked off the two exits leading to the car park/road and added some more play equipment.

Millie was very excited to be invited into the chicken enclosure to check for eggs and was even allowed to take an egg home – she was absolutely thrilled!!!

Children will be given the chance to interact with the animals by feeding the lambs, collecting chicken eggs and playing with kid goats later on in the spring.

Summary

I love that the activities available for the children are so different to anything other cafes are able to offer. We cannot wait to keep coming back and seeing the changes being made!
